SDLP Youth Pays Tribute to Pat Hume
SDLP Youth are heartbroken at the sad news of the passing of Pat Hume.
Pat Hume was the bedrock of the peace process. Through dark and difficult days, when the road to peace and reconciliation never looked longer, Pat’s strength of will and indefatigable character never faltered. Her belief in a better future, a peaceful future, a shared future was a light in the darkness and a source of inspiration for so many.
Pat was the pillar from which John drew strength and support. She was at his side and helped him carry the burden of seeking peace for Ireland and its people. His vision of an island at peace was her own, and she helped him walk the road less travelled to realise it.
Pat was a peacemaker, an advocate for equality and a champion of social justice and her work in tackling injustice and poverty, including in the building of the Credit Union in Derry, was immense.
Pat’s compassion, empathy, integrity and strength has motivated so many in SDLP Youth, and will continue to do so.
We live in a different Ireland to our parents due to the work and sacrifice of Pat Hume, and we are indebted to her and her family. Our thoughts are with her children, grandchildren, and her vast circle of friends.
She leaves a powerful legacy, and a call for us to follow in her footsteps, to continue her work, so that we shall overcome.
